Ms. La Shaun K. Smart is a Senior Associate at Elliott-Hamilton Law. Her legal career began in 2015 and spans both the public and private sectors. She has established herself as an intellectual, forensic, versatile and reputable practitioner.
Her primary areas of practice are Corporate Governance and Management; Employment Law; Intellectual Property Law; Landlord and Tenant disputes; Family Law; Cyber/E-Commerce Law and operations; Debt recovery; Public Law; Contract Law; and Tort Law (Breach of confidentiality, Privacy Invasion, Trespass to person and property, Ordinary negligence, Premise Liability Claims, and Wrongful arrest/false imprisonment).
Prior to joining Elliott-Hamilton Law, Ms. Smart served as a Senior Crown Counsel in the Attorney General’s Chambers and as Legal Counsel for the St. Kitts and Nevis Intellectual Property Office. Based on her professional experiences, Ms. Smart has honed her legal acumen through vetting and/or drafting diverse legal documents; negotiating a wide range of contractual agreements with local, regional and international parties; leading favourable settlements; and providing advice and representation across varying areas of law.
Ms. Smart has authored a highly commended Dissertation, ‘Electronic Commerce and Data Protection and Privacy for the Online Consumer: A Comparative Legal Study of the European Union, United Kingdom, and Trinidad and Tobago’. Her work has been lauded by legal luminaries for its insightful analysis and practical and thought-provoking recommendations, addressing critical issues for data protection policies, legislative reform, and regulatory and/or enforcement frameworks within the Commonwealth.
Ms. Smart is also committed to impactful civic engagement as her expertise has extended to national policymaking. She served as a committee member on ‘ASPIRE’ (formerly the Financial Education and Savings Programme Task Force 2024) and Climate Change and Action Committees for the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis.
Beyond her legal career, Ms. Smart has a passion for the arts and community involvement. She enjoys painting, interior decorating, and actively participates in varying outreach initiatives, and sporting events.
